Bass Coast Shire Council has won the Government Category of the 2001 Fire Awareness Community Service awards. The award recognises the work of Council’s Aged and Disability Services Department in facilitating Fire Safety Workshops for older residents during Community Safety Week.

"We were delighted that Andrew Smith from the local CFA brigades nominated us for the award," said Jeanette Draper, Council’s Aged and Disability Services Manager. "We worked in conjunction with the CFA to present five fire safety awareness workshops that specifically targeted elderly residents in the Shire."

The workshops focused on the prevention of fires in the home including incorporating low cost prevention solutions that the elderly could use to make themselves and their homes fire safe. Smoke detectors and fire blankets were given away as door prizes.

This is yet another award for Council’s Aged and Disability Services team. Over the past twelve months the team has won the 2001 Victorian Community Services and Health Industry Training Awards, been commended at the National Awards for Innovation in Local Government in 2000 and won "New Business of the Year" in the 2000 Bass Coast Business Awards. They were also a finalist and received a special commendation in the 2000 Victorian Training Awards.

Other entries in the Government Category of the Fire Awareness Community Service Awards included: City of Casey, Knox City Council, Nillumbik Shire Council and Shire of Yarra Ranges.
