A free community barbecue to celebrate Reconciliation Week will be held at the Fun Shed, corner Princes Highway and Monash Way Morwell, on Thursday 3 June from 11am – 3pm.

The barbecue, which is open to the entire community, has become a popular annual event, growing from strength to strength each year. Music and children’s entertainment are provided, together with the opportunity to taste some exotic fare such as barbecued kangaroo steak, emu burgers and bush tucker sausages.

Latrobe City’s Koorie Liaison Officer, Leonie Green, said the community barbecue had been organised by a number of organisations including Council, the Central Gippsland Aboriginal Health and Housing Cooperative, the Braiakaulung Advisory Committee, the Department of Human Services, and the Department of Education and Training.

"Reconciliation has become a widely-respected term, describing the process of developing better relations between non-indigenous people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  In Latrobe City we have a large indigenous population and by celebrating Reconciliation Week we are appealing to an extensive cross section of Australians who are responding positively to it and its specific meaning," Ms Green said.

"The Reconciliation Barbecue is a great way of providing the whole community with an opportunity of getting together in a relaxing and friendly atmosphere and recognising their heritage," Ms Green said.

"It’s important to remember that the venue for this year’s Reconciliation Barbecue has changed from the Morwell Town Common, where it has been held in previous years, to the Fun Shed," Ms Green added.
