The Nationals have called on the Allan government to deliver urgent support to participants, employees and families impacted by the sudden closure of Daily Living Disability Services in Traralgon. In state parliament, Melina Bath questioned Disability Minister Lizzie Blandthorn on what immediate support the Allan government is providing to affected locals.

Melina Bath requested Minister Blandthorn refer the closure to the Disability Reform Ministerial Council and personally contact all 60 affected families

Disability care urgency

Ms Bath said the organisation’s unexpected shutdown on Monday had caused significant distress across the community. "The closure of Daily Living Disability Services has blindsided many in the Latrobe Valley. "It is imperative that continuity of care for participants is guaranteed and employees are supported to transition into new workplaces. Maintaining strong support for people with disabilities and their carers is essential to ensuring dignity and participation in community life, as well as protecting carers’ from burnout."

Member for Morwell, Martin Cameron has written to the Federal NDIS Minister, Senator Jenny McAllister seeking support on behalf of all disrupted residents. "The response from the state and federal government must be immediate and practical, and not simply a throwaway line without actions. With around 60 locals living with disability impacted, this issue demands urgent short-term support to transition participants with the least possible disruption."

Disability services crisis

Mr Cameron added, "The closure of Daily Living Disability Services has left skilled and caring employees without income or entitlements during a cost of living crisis. The Allan government cannot abandon responsibility here and claim this is a federal issue, it has a duty to ensure respite and care continue and proper support for staff are provided," said Mr Cameron.

Ms Bath has also written to Minister Blandthorn requesting the closure be referred to the Disability Reform Ministerial Council where state and federal ministers responsible for disability portfolios convene. "In addition to raising this at a federal level, the Disability Minister must commit to contacting each of the 60 families, something she has the resources and capacity to achieve."
