The Nationals are calling on the Allan government to work with community and early education stakeholders to progress the establishment of an early childhood education centre in Nyora. Speaking in state parliament, The Nationals’ Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath called on the government to address barriers that currently prevent Nyora families from accessing kindergarten in their own community.

Kindergarten access needed

Ms Bath said, "Gippsland is recognised as an early learning and childcare desert, and towns like Nyora do not have sufficient access to kindergarten programs locally. To attend early childhood education, many rural families must travel to neighbouring towns, which is inconvenient, creates structural barriers and impacts enrolments in our rural schools. The Allan government has a responsibility to deliver equitable access to early childhood education for all families regardless of their postcode."

The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien said Nyora is well placed for the development of a local early childhood centre for three and four year old children. "A co-located kindergarten next to Nyora Primary School would support long term sustainability by strengthening school transitions, enhancing enrolments and deepening community connections."

"The Nyora community is highly motivated to see a local kindergarten be realised, with the Community Development Group actively supporting the project and open to flexible partnership approaches. "The Nationals are calling on the state government to work with locals in good faith to provide access to early childhood services in Nyora," she said.
