The Nationals’ Melina Bath has called on Labor’s Minister for Carers and Volunteers in state parliament to urgently review the funding model for Neighbourhood Houses across Eastern Victoria. Ms Bath’s action follows alarming reports of closures and service reductions across the region due to rising costs and stagnant state funding.

Ms Bath said, "Our Neighbourhood Houses are vital community hubs in regional Victoria. They offer lifelines for people struggling with food insecurity, housing stress and social isolation, especially during a cost-of-living crisis. Residents have raised serious concerns with me following the closure of the Wonthaggi food pantry and the complete lack of funding for Omeo’s Neighbourhood House, which may be forced to shut its doors."

"Many Neighbourhood Houses have not received funding increases in line with CPI for years, while their operational costs continue to climb. These centres are not just buildings, they are the heart of our communities offering vital support for vulnerable people in need in rural locations. Without the certainty of sustainable funding, they cannot continue to deliver the essential support services that so many rely on," Ms Bath said.

Ms Bath has asked the Allan Labor Government to commit to a full review of Neighbourhood House funding in eastern Victoria and to work directly with affected centres to prevent further closures of services. "Labor must act now to ensure Neighbourhood Houses are not forced to further reduce services or close permanently, our communities cannot afford to lose them."
