By Latrobe City Council - 17th July 2001 - Back to News A series of three public forums will be held to provide Latrobe citizens with an opportunity to have input into the design of the new Latrobe City corporate offices and public library in Morwell.
The forums will be held at the Moe Town Hall, 3-5pm Wednesday 25 July; Kernot Hall, Morwell, 7-9pm Wednesday 25 July; and in the Council Chamber at the Traralgon Civic Centre, 4-6pm Thursday 26 July.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said Council was keen to have the very people who would be accessing Councils services, provide input into the features that should be included in the design.
"The design architects, Bligh Voller Nield will be present at the forums in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, where the public can discuss their own needs and ideas that could be incorporated into the municipal headquarters," Cr Jenkins said.
"There are a number of design considerations that can be discussed, such as access for people of all abilities, maximum conservation of energy, and what sort of building complements the streetscape and environment. We’re interested in people’s views on what sort of materials should be used in the building and their thoughts on the surrounding landscaping.
"Our citizens can also put forward their ideas on what should be incorporated into the new library. They may have ideas about space for studying, the availability of natural light, or access to electronic information and audio-visual media.
"There are also issues such as the local involvement of contractors, and what employment benefits can be delivered to the community. Citizens may have their own ideas, and we’re interested in listening to what they have to say," Cr Jenkins added.
Following the public consultation, a detailed design of the building and the materials to be used is expected to be completed by the middle of December this year, with the preparation of plans and documentation for the tendering of the construction, anticipated to be completed by end of January 2002. The corporate headquarters is expected to be completed by early 2003.
