Local Resident Guest Speaker at GippsTAFE!

Local identity, Kaye Nesbitt, was Guest Speaker at GippsTAFE’s recent awards night in Leongatha, giving an inspirational speech on the value of life and vocational education and training.

Local identity, Kaye Nesbitt, was Guest Speaker at GippsTAFE’s recent awards night in Leongatha, giving an inspirational speech on the value of life and vocational education and training.

Kay Nesbitt is a name that will be familiar to many people. On September 11 in 1985 she answered a knock on the door of the flat she shared with another woman. In a case of mistaken identity she received the full force of a gun blast that obviously will affect her for the rest of her life.

Medical professionals questioned whether Kay would survive, but with the determination and drive that Kay has displayed, there was never any doubt that she was going to be a survivor.

After spending an initial 12 months in hospital, her determination saw her obtain a job at the Alfred Hospital where she has spent so much time as a patient.

In 1990 she had a son, and later purchased a child care centre which operated successfully for nearly 4 years.

After selling the business Kay moved to Korumburra.

As a result of her experience and what she sees as some unhappy encounters with professionals, she established the Crime Victims Support Association with two others.

She has been very active, passionate and committed to the needs and rights of victims of crime, and she stood as a candidate in the recent state election.

In 2003 the irrepressible Kay has embarked on her next big challenge by enrolling in a Certificate IV course in Disability at GippsTAFE’s Leongatha Campus.
