The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has praised the efforts of firefighters, emergency services personnel and volunteer community members involved in battling fires in the electorate’s north-east and Alpine regions.

Mr Ingram was in Swift’s Creek and Omeo on Monday where he received a full briefing on the fire situation.

"There has been a tremendous effort so far by everyone concerned," Mr Ingram said.

"Hopefully, weather conditions will be favourable and enable the blazes to be brought under control.

"Extremely dry conditions and high fuel loads have made these fires difficult to manage and more intensive.

"I believe that when this is over, the State Government must start to give serious consideration to its current ecological and fuel reduction burning regime and provide funding so targets can be met.

"I have spoken to many people involved on the front line of battling these fires and they are unanimous that controlled fuel reduction burning must be increased.

"I have raised this issue on many occasions during my time in office and the unfortunate part is that it takes major bushfires like those we are experiencing now for the Government to take this issue seriously," Mr Ingram concluded.
