Monash Punishing Regional VictoriaAnnouncement to close school of engineering punishes regional Victoria By Andrew Schmidt - 29th October 2002 - Back to News The Monash Faculty of Engineering’s announcement to close down and relocate Gippsland’s school of engineering is punishing regional Victoria.
"This decision shows that Monash University is not supporting Gippsland despite clear university council policy for supporting our campus, " said Andrew Schmidt, president of the Monash University Gippsland Student Union.
"The total lack of transparency in the decision, no consultation and a clear violation of council policy highlights the poor governance of the university, " Mr. Schmidt said.
"The Student Union’s submission to the Victorian review of university governance highlighted these inadequacies of university governance which often lead to poor decisions regarding student needs. The Victorian government must intervene and begin an immediate review of the Faculty of Engineering," he said.
"This decision will mean a brain drain in engineers in an industrial region significant to Victoria. It will mean students will pay higher living expenses and suffer greater detachment to move to Melbourne to study engineering," said Mr. Schmidt.
"Monash University Gippsland is a logical place to have engineering programs on offer. The Faculty of Engineering must not extinguish engineering at Gippsland. The government and industry have to get involved for the benefit of our region," Mr. Schmidt said.
