Community Planning In Inverloch

Bass Coast Shire Council is inviting Inverloch residents to take part in a focus group aimed at developing projects in the town.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 13th February 2009 - Back to News

A community meeting will be held at 7pm on Thursday 19 February at the Anglican Church hall. People can view a draft copy of the Inverloch Community Plan, learn about Community Planning and register their interest for a focus group.

Council’s Community Development Team Leader, Kerri Ritchie, said the idea of Community Planning was to make priority projects a reality through community action.

"Council secured funding through the State Government’s Community Support Fund for a local community planning project," said Ms Ritchie.

"The aim is to develop at least six community plans throughout Bass Coast and Inverloch is the first one.

"Staff have already made contact with a number of community groups and organisations. We are strongly encouraging everyone to participate in a focus group for a project that is of special interest to them," Ms Ritchie continued.

"Focus groups will be formed for each priority identified in the Plan to ensure a broad range of views, skills and knowledge are brought to the table. This will help make the best decisions for the Inverloch community."

The projects will be researched over the next 12 – 18 months. Through the planning process, networks will be set up so the community can get started on these projects in the final 12 months of the project, with the help of Council.

"All you need to become a member of a focus group is passion and an interest in improving the community where you live," Ms Ritchie said.

"An Inverloch Community Planning Facilitator is on hand to help where they can, but the process needs to be driven by the community."

The focus groups are the second phase in the community planning project. Residents who were involved in the initial session identified five key priorities for Inverloch over the next two years.

These are to:

  • investigate the development of a sound shell at various locations, including The Glade
  • implement the Inverloch Foreshore Reserve Master Plan
  • build the Inverloch Surf Lifesaving Club
  • develop a master strategy for walking and bike paths throughout Inverloch
  • start the process for a plastic bag free town
