Exciting news: East Gippsland reserved forest with mountain bike trails now officially called Bingo-Munjie Park

The reserved forest where the mountain bike trails are located has been officially gazetted as Bingo-Munjie Park. Council will manage the trails, and a Trails Coordinator position will be advertised.

In some great and much-anticipated news, the reservation of the reserved forest in which the mountain bike trails sit has just been gazetted. The broader forest park will now be known as Bingo-Munjie Park after the existing locality name. The change in the reservation status of this entire piece of state forest to a forest park was required before council could be appointed as Committee of Management over the mountain bike trail area.

Council will manage the mountain bike trail corridors and infrastructure after the state forest's reservation status change

Council will not be taking on management of the entire forest park, just the narrow corridors that house the actual trails - approximately 6 metres wide (the trail and 2m each side) - together with the carpark and any other relevant infrastructure.

Trails coordinator opportunity

A full-time Omeo Mountain Bike Trails Coordinator position with council will be advertised soon. The role will:

• Coordinate trail maintenance and repair activities, including inspection, documentation and test riding
• Plan and coordinate marketing and events
• Promote the trail and the region as a mountain bike tourism destination
• Provide leadership to a trail crew and volunteer patrol groups
• Oversee safety and emergency management
• Establish all facility policies and procedures

The role will be based in Omeo and the expectation is the successful applicant will start in the coming months.

Farewell Deon

Common Ground Trails project supervisor on the trail build, Deon Baker, is heading back to Western Australia in June. Deon has been instrumental in trail alignments and construction of the pump track and MTB trails.

Deon has become a popular character in Omeo and will be missed by the team and locals. He handed over to Jordan Virgl (site construction) and Tom Donald (site / resource management) in early June. We thank Deon for his input on the project and hope to see him back riding the trails soon.

Trail building continues

It has been a steady few weeks of trail building, with seven machines operating and seven crews punching out some great trail. Some recent construction milestones are reaching the end of the GR4 trail and starting on XC11, while the last of the stacked switchbacks on the XC10 climb are done. Some great trails are coming together on XC12 Up and XC13 Down.
