Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said the announcement paved the way to leverage potential for the Valley’s unique and plentiful brown coal resource.

"Latrobe City Council supports the sustainable use of brown coal and brown coal technologies. Use of, and access to, this resource was noted as being of significant importance to our community through the development of the Strength-Led Transition – our plan for a dignified and respectful economic transition post Hazelwood" Cr O’Callaghan said.

"Our document acknowledges the region’s rich brown coal resource, in particular the prosperity that it has provided to this region for more than 100 years.

"The state and federal governments, through a unique partnership, could establish one of Australia’s first zero emission brown coal power generating facilities in the Latrobe Valley.

"Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has always been considered to be the key to unlocking this potential and the future success of the next generation of brown coal power generation in the Latrobe Valley.

"Today’s announcement means that use of this resource is one step closer. This is a strong announcement from the Federal Government and we applaud them for their vision in supporting the responsible use of this versatile natural asset."
