Latrobe City mayor appointed as Community Patron

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, has recently been appointed to the position of Community Patron for the Latrobe Theatre Company.

Councillor Price said that this appointment recognises the long-term association between the Latrobe City Council and the Latrobe Theatre Company of more than 40 years and also assists in cementing the ties between council and the company.

"I am extremely pleased to accept this position. As mayor and as a member of the community, I admire the members of the Latrobe Theatre Company and all that they do for the community through their productions," Cr Price said.

"A strong arts program is a great asset to Latrobe City, and the Latrobe Theatre Company has provided great benefits to the development of the arts in the Latrobe Valley and the greater Gippsland region.

"The arts provide a path of lifelong learning for our community members. They enable our citizens to reflect on where they’ve been and what potential they hold through creative expression. From developing creative skills in young people to helping our older residents express themselves, an arts program enables us to better describe ourselves whatever stage we are at in our lives.

"A strong arts program is also a sign of a mature community; it enhances and respects creativity and a diversity of culture. It also provides a voice for those who feel voiceless," Cr Price explained.

President of the Latrobe Theatre Company, Ceiri Byers, explained that the Community Patron is invited to attend the Company’s regular productions and on occasion invited to attend other formal presentations on behalf of the Latrobe City community.

"The Community Patron is also invited to address the theatre company’s audiences through the program which is created for each company production," Ms Byers said.

"Latrobe City has provided a tremendous amount of support both financially and ‘in kind’ to our company which has in turn provided great benefits to the development of the Arts in the Latrobe Valley and the greater Gippsland region," Ms Byers added.
