Bass Coast Shire Council is upgrading the timber bridge that spans Lance Creek as part of the Wonthaggi Korumburra Road near the Lance Creek Reservoir. The old bridge will be replaced with a three metre Helcor spun corrugated steel pipe, which will make the bridge safer and easier to maintain.

Road users and nearby residents will benefit from the bridge. The bridge’s greater strength and width will allow heavy vehicles to travel and pass safely. The new pipe will also reduce noise levels for nearby residents. Cyclists will no longer have to contend with gaps between the timber decking, a hazard on most timber bridges.

The new bridge was designed by Council Engineer and Lance Creek resident, Mark Kamphuis. Mr. Kamphuis will also help supervise the installation of the bridge.

The new bridge consists of three sections, which will be joined together to create a 23 metre long steel pipe culvert.

"The bridge was designed to cope with as much as 27 cubic metres of water passing under it per minute," said Mr. Kamphuis

Upgrading the bridge is part of Council’s program to reduce the ongoing maintenance cost of bridges in the Shire. The cost of maintaining timber bridges is quite high, especially as they need major renovations every ten years. The new steel pipe has a guaranteed life span of 50 years with low maintenance requirements.

The estimated cost of the Lance Creek Bridge upgrade is $80,000 which is funded from Council’s 2000/2001 capital works program.
