The VIS in conjunction with the Academy have conducted talent search via set fitness testing protocols to identify athletes throughout Gippsland who could potentially be suitable for volleyball. This huge task was completed in collaboration with a number of Gippsland Secondary Schools.

The Academy has secured Manny’s Markets as the program sponsor, which will enable the program and others in the Academy to access fresh fruit and product. Manny’s are thrilled with their recent affiliation with the Academy and John Askew stated "Its good to be involved in such a community minded and progressive organisation as the Academy, hopefully our sponsorship will greatly assist the volleyball athletes and the Academy as a whole and the produce will assist with their nutrition".

This years Academy program has also undergone significant personnel change with the appointment of Mr. Neil Boyes as Head Coach. Neil comes to the Academy with a wealth of experience having being involved in State programs and also in his role as the Coaching Director of Monash University Volleyball Club.

Neil will be supported by Shane Carruthers, the program manager again, and a dedicated panel of coaches throughout Gippsland. Last year’s Head Coach Danny Anderson will assist where possible along with mentor coach and Australian Women’s Youth Coach Dan Higgins.

The advisory panel along with the coaching panel has also made a concerted effort to ensure there is a significant competition component of the program. In order to improve athlete’s performance the match play was significant for the athlete’s development. This year’s program will be divided into two age groups being an Under 15 group and Under 19 group.

The competitions this years athletes will compete in are the Dragon City tournament in Bendigo, a beach tournament in Inverloch, the Warrnambool tournament and finally the Ballarat tournament. In order to enhance the squads and individual performance the squad will have approximately 8 squad training sessions, which will be supplemented by satellite squad’s sessions in the athlete’s respective localities.
