The member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has today encouraged all Gippslanders who desire ADSL broadband to log on to the Telstra site and express their interest on the ADSL demand register.

"The demand register is on the Telstra website and is the best way for communities without access to high-speed internet connections to put their town forward in the queue," Mr Ingram said.

"Telstra will connect towns according to the interest shown in this access.

"Most residents of my electorate have no idea that the demand register existed and this is a perfect opportunity for those towns and business with out this technology to put them forward.

"The demand register can be found online at: http://www.telstra.com.au/demand/index.cfm ."

Mr Ingram also highlighted an inquiry by the Victorian Parliament’s Rural and Regional Services and Development Committee into regional telecommunications infrastructure for business.

"The committee, of which I am deputy chair, is to report to Parliament on the potential benefits to Victorian regional and rural businesses from improved access to telecommunications infrastructure and services, in particular broadband, and highlight any impediments that may stop businesses realising their potential.

"The committee invites written submissions for the inquiry from all residents with an interest in telecommunications in rural and regional Victorian – including farmers and other small business people, telecommunications carriers, internet service providers, small business and industry groups, Federal and State Government agencies, Local Government authorities and community and consumer groups.

"Submissions are due by September 17 and the discussion paper, terms of reference and further information can be obtained by telephoning 1300 787 202 or from the committee’s website: http://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/rrsdc/inquiries/telecommunications/ ."
