Community Groups On Show

Community groups will have an opportunity to put their best foot forward in a Community Expo at Inverloch later this year.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 1st August 2006 - Back to News

Council’s Community Building Facilitator Tony Cornish said the planned Expo will provide a number of benefits for community groups.

"The Expo will give the many and varied community groups in the local area the chance to promote their activities and attract new members," explained Mr Cornish.

"It is also a great forum for community groups to meet and learn about each other’s activities.

"They may even find there are opportunities to combine forces at certain times."

Mr Cornish said if the Inverloch Expo proves successful it is planned to provide opportunities for similar events in other communities throughout Bass Coast.

The Community Expo is one of a number of exciting projects being trialled by communities in Bass Coast, as part of Council’s 2006 Community Building Project. Other projects include a study of the resources used by the community to access information and a workshop to help community groups learn to prepare funding submissions.

A consultation process with a targeted group of young people, which will have a focus on schools as public facilities, will also be undertaken.

Additionally, the Community Building Project will investigate government initiatives and partnerships that benefit community groups such as seminars and workshops.

"We want to focus on strengthening existing partnerships, particularly with all levels of government," said Mr Cornish.

Mr Cornish said the three major trial projects being conducted should have long term benefits for community organisations.

"It’s about developing practical community strengthening initiatives that will benefit our communities and build on responses to already identified issues," said Mr Cornish.

"Currently there are representatives from over a dozen groups and organisations who are participating or interested in taking part in the projects.

"But we’d still like to hear from more," he said.

"If you would like to take part in one of the initiatives, such as the Community Expo, we would certainly like to talk to you."

If you are interested in learning more or would like to get involved please contact Council’s Community Building Facilitator, Tony Cornish, on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311.
