Motivated To Improve Bass Coast EducationThe development of an Education Strategy for Bass Coast is uniting education providers across the Shire. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th August 2007 - Back to News A reference group which includes representatives from all sectors of education in Bass Coast has been put together. Work undertaken by the group will form the basis of the recommendations of the Strategy.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Social Planner, Jeanette Draper, said there were already concrete benefits in evidence.
"The members of the reference group are very enthusiastic and motivated," said Ms Draper.
"Their focus is on improving education, training and employment opportunities for residents of Bass Coast Shire.
"The development process is a wonderful example of partnerships that can achieve positive outcomes for the whole community."
The development of the Education Strategy had included a roundtable discussion for education and training providers.
"This resulted in a commitment from the participants to develop an Education Strategy," explained Ms Draper.
"We have also held a forum, where speakers from other areas showed how similar issues to those faced by Bass Coast are being tackled.
Ms Draper said an action plan had already been written up.
"A survey was done with students from Wonthaggi Secondary School and Newhaven Secondary College," Ms Draper said.
"The results of the survey have been collated and the issues that were brought up have been written into an action plan.
"The action plan also draws on issues identified from several sources," continued Ms Draper.
"These include the roundtable discussion, the education forum, the student survey and information collated by the South Gippsland Bass Coast Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN).
Ms Draper said the information from the South Gippsland Bass Coast LLEN related to education, employment and training for 15-24 year olds.
Sub committees within the reference group have been established to further develop the action plan and to help implement the actions: Some of the recommendations include:-
- The development of a learning culture by promoting education and learning opportunites and promoting educational achievements.
- The establishment of a university.
- Ensure infrastructure meets the needs of the community.
- Increased training opportunites that are relevant to employment options such as hospitality and health.
- Increase integrated learning opportunities between the education providers and local environmrntal organisations.
Ms Draper said that Council would be briefed on Education Strategy on 19 September 200. The Draft Strategy would be presented to Council on October 17 and then put out for community comment. Once the community have had an opportunity to provide feedback on the Strategy, it will be presented to Council for adoption in December 2007.
