Big Upgrade for Maffra Park

Wellington Shire Council is to undertake a $360,000 upgrade of Victoria Park in Maffra following a successful application for funding from the State government through the Small Towns Development Fund.

"This is another successful outcome for the community and an excellent example of what can be achieved when local and state government work in partnership," said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

Wellington Shire Council is contributing $120,000 to the project. The Small Towns Development Fund is providing the additional $240,000.

"The Landscape Master plan was developed in the late1970’s but was never implemented. We will use that as our base, but we will be speaking to the local community to make sure it still meets their needs" said Cr Hole.

The works will include:

· Redevelopment of an existing ornamental lake by reshaping, installing an over-water viewing platform and extensive fringe planting

· Establishing a network of gravel paths throughout the reserve

· Creating a number of park entries and installation of appropriate seating and park furniture

· Creation of an earthen outdoor performance amphitheatre

· Installation of an innovative play-space catering to the 4- 10 year age group

· Construction of a picnic shelter and BBQ shelter

· Extensive screen and decorative planting

· Installation of an appropriately designed public toilet facility

· Installation of tourism directional signage at key locations

"This project is part of Council’s $3.3 million dollar program to improve parks and open spaces across the Shire over the next five years," said Cr Hole.

"Victoria Park is a significant park for the community of Maffra.

"The area has been designated as public space since the surveying of the township in 1874. There are a number of significant trees on in the park which will be retained in the redevelopment," said Cr Hole.

Recently there has been unprecedented development in the immediate vicinity of the park with Central Gippsland Health Service constructing a substantial elderly citizens’ accommodation village, in addition to the adjacent hospital and hostel. As well as the CGHS development there has also been substantial urban growth in the area with approvals granted for 30 new sub-divisions containing 124 lots.

"The Health Service has indicated strong support for the project in order to aid their health and exercise programs," said Cr Hole.

"Currently some existing health programs require buses to transport patients to suitable sites.

"With the development of the Victoria Park site this will no longer be required," said Cr Hole.

"This development is in line with Council’s Residential Strategy for Maffra which identifies the area to the north being the best option for future residential growth in the town," said Cr Hole.

"The development of Victoria Park will provide increased opportunities for leisure and recreation in the northern part of the town and will promote physical activity and improved social links in the Maffra community."
