Talking Volumes: To The Power Of Three

The combined Library Services of East Gippsland, Wellington and Mitchell Shires have been successful in a recent joint submission to obtain funding for a collaborative project to develop their collections.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 11th August 2004 - Back to News

The $10,000 State Government grant will enable them to extend multimedia resources and establish a collection of Talking Books on CD, which will be shared between the three Rural Library Services.

East Gippsland Councillor Linette Treasure said the aim of the Talking Books project was to meet the needs of the elderly, infirm, those with physical or sight impairments and those with language and literacy difficulties.

"Talking Books help with language proficiency, particularly with those who have English as a second language. The spoken word also enhances the psychological well-being of elderly people living alone through the provision of a ‘voice in the room’ - another alternative to television or radio," Cr Treasure said.

Cr Treasure said public libraries, especially those in country Victoria, had a very good history of collaboration.

"This project will build on this tradition and each service will have a printed list of the `shared’ collection and the titles will be available on Inter-Library Loan between the collaborating libraries."
