Call for new lookout at Kilmany overpass site with views by Danny O'Brien gets response from Andrews Labor government
State government recognized MP Danny O'Brien's Kilmany overpass lookout idea. Scenic views, new arch-bridge included. Feasibility assessed by Major Road Projects Victoria; decision expected.
Calls by local MP, Danny O'Brien, for a new lookout to be established at the site of the soon-to-be-defunct Kilmany overpass have been answered by thesState government. Mr O'Brien, The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, initiated calls for the lookout earlier this year, saying the overpass was a great spot for beautiful views of the countryside and the new railway arch-bridge.
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien says a rest stop and lookout at Kilmany would highlight the new arch-bridge and one of the best views in the region
Overpass lookout proposal
Mr O'Brien has now heard back from the government which says Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV) is investigating the feasibility of the project ahead of a decision later this year. "It is positive to see that the idea of retaining and using the current overpass as the site of a lookout and rest area is being given proper consideration."
"The current overpass is one of the higher points in the district and provides stunning views across the Macalister Irrigation District (MID) flats towards the Great Dividing Range. This would also enable train-enthusiasts to watch the train travelling by on the striking new arch-bridge which is already winning fans across the region."
"I asked the Minister if a lookout and rest stop can be incorporated within the existing budget of the project and remain hopeful that a practical and affordable solution will be reached to provide a great tourism asset for the region," Mr O'Brien said.
