Active workplaces to tackle inactivity.

Active community networks of Baw Baw Shire and Latrobe City have organised an active workplaces forum to help Gippsland businesses encourage physical activity in their workplaces.

The forum will be held in Trafalgar on 7 September and all Gippsland businesses interested in increasing physical activity in their workplaces are encouraged to attend, according to Baw Baw Shire Council’s recreation manager, Kerry Irwin.

"Current research indicates that approximately only 50% of people exercise often enough to gain the benefits, with the national costs of inactivity around $377 million per year," Ms Irwin said.

"By having physical activity programs within the workplace, staff are encouraged to get active and involved.

"Physical activity can increase a persons overall health and wellbeing, reduce the number of sick days and improve staff productivity – so physical activity can be very good for business."

The forum aims to highlight the significant role that workplaces play on improving community health, assist businesses in the initial stages of active workplace planning and inform of resources available.

"Workplaces are extremely powerful influences on our lives and can influence how much or how little physical activity we do.

"This forum is about helping businesses to get their workplaces started," said Ms Irwin.

The active workplaces forum will be held on 7 September at the Trafalgar Information Centre, Princes Highway, Trafalgar from 9:30am to 4pm.

The costs are $20 per person or $50 per workplace with all profits being donated to children’s cancer charity, Camp Quality.
