By Wellington Shire Council - 13th February 2006 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council Human Resources Co-ordinator Shelley Battams said that people were often not aware of the diverse range of job opportunities available in local government.

"We employ a range of professional, highly skilled and experienced staff including mechanics, accountants, pool attendants, strategic planners, gallery curators, and horticultural staff.

There is something in local government for everyone" she said.

Over 700 people attended the event including Former World Champion Triathlete, Emma Carney.

Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games official mascot ‘Karak’ was also there to meet and greet employers and job seekers.

The expo was held in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games to capitalise on the job opportunities created as a result of the Games.

Centrelink Area Manager, Barbara Clements, believes the Commonwealth Games will provide an opportunity for Victoria to showcase its wonderful attractions to the world.

"Local job seekers will benefit from the boost in tourism that’s sure to follow, both in Melbourne and across the state, including here in Gippsland" she said.

"It’s obvious from the interest we received here in Gippsland that the Commonwealth Games will provide a real boost for local employers and job seekers," Ms Clements said.

"Many of the employment opportunities created in response to the Games will last long after the Games have finished" she said.
