Melbourne Cup races through Wellington

Wellington Shire Council is inviting the local community to take the opportunity to experience some of the prestige and heritage surrounding the world-famous Melbourne Cup as it passes through the shire on 27 October.

The annual Melbourne Cup Tour 2004 will bring the fun and excitement of the 143 year old race to 22 destinations across Australia and New Zealand, including Wellington. It will be travelling with renowned jockey Greg Hall - who rode to a Melbourne Cup win in 1992 with Sub Zero - and Joe McGrath from Racing Victoria.

The cup will be arriving in the morning and will be taken on a whistle-stop tour of St. Mary’s Primary School, the Esso BHP Billiton Wellington Entertainment Centre and Ashleigh House.

The Wellington community is invited to the entertainment centre from 12.00pm until 2.00pm to view this year’s cup alongside the 1915 Melbourne Cup won by local horse Patrobus which is permanently located at the venue.
