Latrobe City Council has adopted Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley, agreeing at Monday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting in Churchill to work with the community to achieve future regional aspirations.

Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley is a document that takes a visionary long-term approach to planning, to ensure Latrobe City and the region is well prepared to meet the future, through complementary policies and strategies.

Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley has been developed with input from the community, industry, various levels of government departments and government agencies, and aims to guarantee the future provision of a safe environment for children; good schools; good public transport; secure, satisfying and fairly paid jobs; freedom from crime and violence; value for young people; a clean environment; respect for different lifestyles and care for the disadvantaged in Latrobe City.

Latrobe City Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, explained that an extensive consultation period involving public meetings and shopping centre information sessions in Traralgon, Morwell, Moe and Churchill had been held to gauge the community’s response to Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley before it went to Council.

"The level of public interest and written feedback received during the consultation period was pleasing. Consultation with industry groups revealed that they were comfortable with the document as it reaffirms a large proportion of the State Government policy that they have based their future business plans on," Mr Buckley said.

"Environmental groups were also satisfied with the prominence that environmental issues received in Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley, however the document did undergo some changes during the consultation process, including alterations to make it more user friendly for people with vision impairments and to provide a greater focus on the role of libraries in the future."

Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley will now have a large influence in the setting of future strategic policy directions in Latrobe City and will also help to inform the four-year Council Plan.

"Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley will establish a broad resource allocation framework for the Annual Business Plan and Budget process. The document will also be formally reviewed every four years in order to ensure that high quality education, environment, transportation and employment services are available in Latrobe City, and an annual report card will also be issued to clearly demonstrate the progress of Latrobe 2021: The Vision for Latrobe Valley in the provision of community services," Mr Buckley concluded.
