Works to upgrade the historic Glengarry Mechanics' Institute underwayWorks to upgrade the historic Glengarry Mechanics' Institute are finally underway. By news@gippsland - 7th October 2021 - Back to News Local MP Darren Chester said the works would make the hall more user friendly and versatile for community events and celebrations. "The Glengarry Mechanics' Institute has been a part of this town for more than a century and the current weatherboard structure is in need of repair," Mr Chester said.

"These upgrades will ensure it remains a gathering place for the community for the next 100 years.The timber weatherboards have been replaced and painted, the kitchen will be upgraded to a commercial standard, timber flooring in the main hall replaced as well as the interior being repainted, a sound system being installed and acoustic soundproofing installed." Mr Chester said, "The toilets will also be upgraded to be more accessible and connected to town sewerage and a ramp will be installed for access to the kitchen. The Federal Government contributed over $250,000 towards these upgrades which will support the local community in hosting events and during emergencies." Appreciating the upgradesGlengarry Mechanics' Institute Committee of Management President Alan McAuliffe said the upgrades were well overdue. "It's fantastic to finally see work underway on the Mechanics Institute and these upgrades will allow us as a community to use this space more often for different events and gatherings." "I would like to thank the Federal Government for supporting this project and improving our local community infrastructure. I look forward to seeing the work complete and the hall being used and full of activity soon." Mr McAuliffe said. The Federal Government contributed over $250,000 towards the project through the Drought Communities Program. Funding has also been provided by the Latrobe Valley Authority and Latrobe City Council are administering the project. Pictures from Darren Chester MP website.
