according to a report published by the independent water regulator, the Essential Services Commission (ESC).

The commission looked at the performance of Victoria's 16 urban water corporations over the 2010/11 financial year in a number of key areas covering the provision of water and wastewater services. East Gippsland Water recorded the lowest number of bursts and leaks per 100km of water main, at 9.6, compared with an industry average of 25.4, thanks to its proactive maintenance program. It was also equal best performer in relation to sewer blockages, recording just nine per 100km of sewer main, compared with an industry average of 19.8.

In addition, the Corporation maintained its position as a leader in the Victorian water industry for water recycling, achieving 99.3 per cent reuse across its ten wastewater treatment plants. This was despite unusually high rainfall, which restricted opportunities to use recycled water for irrigation purposes. The level of reuse was significantly higher than the industry average of 26.2%.

Said East Gippsland Water's Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "Over the last couple of years staff have committed a great deal of time and effort to a proactive maintenance program geared at boosting the reliability and efficiency of our water and wastewater networks. It's great to see this commitment paying dividends, but there is no room for complacency. This is an ongoing program that will remain a key priority for us in the future, as part of a concerted drive to ensure customers receive value-for-money services."
