Re: Changes to planning regulations regarding mines Spokesperson: Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson said: By Latrobe City - 25th September 2014 - Back to News Latrobe City Council welcomes the announcement from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) regarding the detailed investigative process to be undertaken into the air pollution and environmental impacts of the Hazelwood Mine fire incident.
It is Council’s initial understanding that this is part of the EPA’s normal and ongoing investigative process and seeks to obtain further information from operators at the site, those who responded to the incident and affected community members in order to determine whether any offences have been committed under the Environmental Protection Act.
Council is committed to ensuring that safety, risk mitigation, planning and communication around mine facilities in our region remains a strong priority for state government.
We will await further information regarding the investigation. Council is committed to working closely with all parties, the government, the mine operators and the community, to understand how the health and well-being of our citizens will be protected into the future.
