Council to conduct pool safety checks

Bass Coast Shire Council building staff will begin conducting safety inspections at all homes with spas and swimming pools from July.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

Council’s Building Services Manager, Stephen Rosendale, said drowning is the most common cause of preventable death for toddlers aged 0-5 years.

"Private swimming pools represent the single most dangerous water environment for toddlers.

"Research shows that the risk of drowning in a fenced pool is about one quarter of that of drowning in an unfenced pool.

"It would be heartbreaking for us all if a drowning could have been prevented in our community by simply ensuring that pool and spa enclosures were adequately maintained and built in accordance with the regulations," said Mr Rosendale.

Land owners who have a pool or spa will be notified by letter at least two weeks prior to a council officer visit to inspect the property. The letter will include a Building Commission brochure on pool and spa safety.

"If the inspection finds any safety issues, the land owner will be advised in writing of the actions required to fix them," informed Mr Rosendale.

"However, if the land owner fails to comply they will be faced with action, which may include a building infringement notice that carries a substantial fine."

Mr Rosendale appealed for community support for the program.

"Although children in pools should always have adult supervision, a properly built and well maintained pool or spa reduces the risk of drowning.

"Your cooperation is very much appreciated," said Mr Rosendale.
