Community Invited To Weaving Workshop

‘The Grid’ project, as part of Latrobe City’s Green Expectations enterprise, is a community arts initiative designed to give residents the opportunity to express their unique relationship to the electricity grid.

By Latrobe City Council - 6th July 2009 - Back to News

‘The Grid’ will explore a range of arts projects over the coming months and will culminate, at the end of August, in a celebratory street parade and party in the centre of Morwell.

Green Expectations Creative Director, Alison Taylor, said that the central image will be a Pylon Tree and members of the community are now invited to help construct this tree at the first of the community weaving workshops to take place at arcYinnar on Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 July from 12.30 to 3.30pm

"The branches of the tree are detachable and lead artist Stefanie Robinson would like to invite interested parties to weave a bark of recycled wires from the grid around the tree structure. Workshops will be held in the small towns around Latrobe to embrace this project.

"The recycled cables to be used for the weaving have been donated by local energy distributor SP Ausnet, and will be decorated with leaves carrying the hopes and dreams gathered from the community," Ms Taylor said.

"The symbol of the tree has been chosen as a reminder of the history of coal, as a symbol for carbon capture, and to represent the need to think about sustainability, as it reaches up into the future while acknowledging the past. The weaving is a metaphor for the community working together to create a new future, and by reusing wires from the grid, we are recycling the past into the future," Ms Taylor said.

Anyone interested in attending the weaving workshop should contact Amanda Owen on 5128 5639 or at amandaow@latrobe.vic.gov.au. Details of further workshops will be advertised soon.
