Damage To Council Infrastructure Following Earthquake Currently Being Assessed

Moe Earthquake

Moe Earthquake

Following the earthquake on Tuesday night, Council officers are currently out assessing any potential damage to Council infrastructure around the municipality.

By Latrobe City - 22nd June 2012 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that there were reports of minor damage at Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough and the Moe Library along with a number of other halls and venues across the municipality.

"The Moe Library was closed to the public on Wednesday whilst further investigations were undertaken to determine the extent of the damage in this building. Obviously, public safety was our priority so we would rather inconvenience the public in the short term to ensure that the building was structurally sound before opening it up again.

"The library will open again, usual hours, on Thursday 21 June."

"The pool at the Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough facility is currently losing water. Officers are monitoring the automatic pool filling system to determine the cause of the water loss. It may be that the pool has to close for a short period to make further investigations and if that is the case we will try to give adequate notice of the closure.

"I would like to reiterate that Latrobe Leisure Moe Newborough facility is structurally sound and that the issue lies solely around the pool water," Cr Vermeulen said.

"As of Wednesday afternoon, assessments on other halls and venues in the municipality have shown some minor damage including cracks to plaster. However, nothing of great significance has been reported.

"We will, of course, keep the community informed of any developments as the assessments continue," Cr Vermeulen concluded.
