Action packed calendar of sporting excellence launched

Latrobe City Council has launched an action packed calendar of sporting excellence, ‘The Energy in Sport Celebration’, being held across Latrobe City throughout February and March.

The Celebration features an AFL Country Game Match at the Morwell Recreation Reserve and an exciting mix of sporting events including cricket, thoroughbred racing, golf, yachting, greyhound racing, bowls, athletics, football, rally driving, tenpin bowling and a marathon relay.

Manager Events Latrobe, Janiene Ayre, said on Saturday 28 February, Morwell will come alive with the presence of two high-powered AFL Teams clashing in a pre-season match in Gippsland, with the AFL Country Game Day. "The identity of the teams playing will be announced one week prior to the event," Ms Ayre revealed.

For golfers, there are two huge events at the Traralgon Golf Club. The Hahn Premium Light WIN TV Traralgon Pro-Am 2004 will be held Thursday 19 and Friday 20 February. "It’s regional Victoria’s largest Pro-Am golfing event and the only order of merit event in country Victoria," Ms Ayre explained. On Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 February the Aygee Classic – 72-hole Event will be held. This is an Ivo Whitten event that attracts international and national players and the State’s leading amateurs. Local golfers need to register their interest at both events

The Top Cat Video Greyhound Puppy Classic Heats are on Monday 9 February at Glenview Park, Traralgon,.with the final for greyhound puppies - two years plus at a twilight meeting on Monday 16 March.

On Sunday 22 February the Traralgon Little Athletics Open Multi Day will be held at Davidson Street Traralgon.

Petrol heads will be delighted with two fantastic events visiting Latrobe. On Monday 1 March the 2004 Grand Prix Rally A Motokana style-driving test will take place in Kay Street Traralgon from 6pm to 8.30pm. Prior to the driving test there is a chance to the view the superb cars and meet the drivers in the Kay Street Gardens. A second chance to meet the drivers as the Rally departs from the Traralgon Show Grounds starting 9am-12.30pm on Tuesday morning.

On Saturday 27 March the David Nutter Ford Rally, a round of the 2004 Victorian Rally Championship, comes to Latrobe, with the promotional start of the event at Mid Valley Shopping Centre Morwell. Drivers from across Victoria will be flagged off on this exciting race at 11am.

The Tenpins Country Cup will be held at Morwell Tenpins, Chickerell Street Morwell from Saturday 6 - Monday 8 March. There’s great bowling with twelve teams representing country bowling centres across Victoria. Also on Saturday 6 March the Ladies Moe Classic Singles Bowls will be held at the Moe Bowling Club, Saviges Road Moe, featuring State Quad Players and top Gippsland bowlers.

To complete the Energy in Sport Celebration, on Saturday 20 March the RDA Blue Rock Classic will again be conducted at Willow Grove. This is a classic family and sports enthusiast marathon relay set around beautiful Blue Rock Lake. There are 5 legs - running, horse riding, cycling, swimming and paddling.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said a range of tourism incentives have been provided to encourage people not only to come to Latrobe City, but also to stay over and see more of what Latrobe and its surrounds have to offer.

"A unified, coordinated marketing approach, such as that supporting the Energy in Sport celebration, can ultimately result in significant economic benefits for the region," Cr Middlemiss said.
