Mayor Reminds Motorists To Slow Down Near Schools

South Gippsland Mayor Cr Heather Bligh today reminded local drivers to slow down near schools following the recent introduction of arrive alive! school speed zones in the municipality.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 28th July 2004 - Back to News

"Thousands of students in South Gippsland walk or ride to and from school each day, and school speed zones will help to protect the safety of our children."

"Small speed reductions can have a huge road safety benefit and could mean the difference between a child saved or a child lost on our roads," she said.

Cr Bligh said that local drivers should be aware of the key features of the arrive alive! school speed zones program, which generally include:

· Permanent 40km/h speed limits outside schools on most 50km/h roads

· Time based 40km/h speed limits outside schools on 60km/h and 70km/h roads, which apply at times when children are entering and leaving school.

· Time based 60km/h speed limits outside schools on most 80km/h, 90 km/h and 100 km/h roads. Electronic variable signs will be used on these roads where there are more than 500 vehicles per day. Time based 40 km/h limits will apply at flagged school crossings on roads outside school.

A number of schools in the area have a time based speed limit, meaning the speed limit only applies on school days from 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm.

" It won’t take long to adjust to this new system, and slowing down is a small task when it means improving road safety for school children."

The State Government is undertaking an information and advertising campaign to inform motorists about school speed zones. Information brochures and posters are available from Council reception.
