The forum was part of National Youth Week celebrations and received a State Government grant of $2,000 from the Office for Youth.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that the safety forum delivered key messages about the risks and pressures young people face day to day.

"The range of speakers was excellent and included overviews and scenarios of risk taking behaviour from the school and nursing sector, Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, Gambler’s Help and CyberSmart, as well as a powerful presentation from Jason Burt of Hawthorn Football Club.

"Jason’s message was around the importance of protecting your personal brand in the social media age. He impressed upon the audience the message that ‘what is fun today can and will have implications in later life’.

Jason’s key message was ‘what fun is today can and will have implication later in life’.

"We know that these types of issues are experienced by many of Latrobe City’s youth on a regular basis so that this forum served to reinforce the messages around responsibilities, security, keeping informed and knowing who to turn to for help," Cr Vermeulen said.

Amongst the audience were members of Latrobe City’s Youth Council and Youth Leadership Program. They found the forum extremely useful in terms of content and access. Here is a selection of their quotes:

"The information that was given out was of great content and was easy to understand for a wide audience."

"Everything explained by the speakers was almost unfailingly accurate, everything was clear and no questions were left unanswered."

"It was very informative and I learnt a lot, I now have a better understanding of what I thought I knew."
