Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen said that the Council was supportive of the themes outlined in the discussion paper.

"The discussion paper, and the themes contained within it focus on ensuring the positive discussions that we are having with all levels of Government turn into positive actions for our region.

"Our submission to the paper recommends additional areas of focus and specific proposals and solutions that we believe are imperative to the Latrobe Valley’s successful transition and ensure material actions that result in real jobs.

"In fact, we believe the Valley must transform, not just transition. It is important that we transform our industry base, support and nurture the diverse range of industries that we already have here in the Valley and build upon it to ensure a resilient economy into the future.

"We continue to advocate for State and Federal support to be ahead of the game and insist that they undertake pre-emptive actions to provide employment opportunities and support for projects and industry now.

"In the same vein, Council is committed to supporting our whole community and we believe the additional theme of liveability is imperative to the prosperity of our region. Investing in the liveability of our cities will inevitably attract population, industry and jobs and ensure that we thrive.

"The difficulties following the privatisation of the SECV are still fresh in our minds and these experiences from our past highlight the need for both early assistance and the importance of the liveability of our cities to the prosperity of our community," Cr Vermeulen concluded.
