Statement: Delays on the Gippsland line

Why is there a delay on the Gippsland line, especially for commuters of Traralgon VLine?

By Portal Admin - 11th August 2016 - Back to News

These comments can be attributed to The Nationals Member for Morwell, Russell Northe:

A several hour delay for commuters on a Traralgon VLine yesterday has forced Labor to admit its own sham attempt at public consultation is a failure.

A citizen jury, set up by Daniel Andrews’ Infrastructure Victoria, recommended a "Gippsland-Pakenham rail shuttle" should be established, forcing Gippsland commuters to change to Metro trains to get to the inner suburbs and Melbourne.

But after a major fault brought the 4.36am Traralgon-Melbourne service to a halt on Tuesday, stranding 160 passengers for several hours, Jacinta Allan admitted Labor’s own request for consultation was a sham.

"The Public Transport Minister’s disdain for her own citizen jury makes one thing clear - consultation is just a mirage to the Andrews Labor Government," Mr Northe said.

"I am astounded at the lengths this government is willing to go to wasting taxpayers money to create the appearance they are interested in hearing from the public.

"While I am relieved the Minister conceded the ill-advised Gippsland-Pakenham rail shuttle won’t go ahead, Gippsland commuters now need concrete assurances it won’t be pursued in the future."
