Paper as Object exhibition opens at GalleryThe opening of a new exhibition of artworks made from paper will change the way people look at the medium when it opens at the Latrobe Regional Gallery on Saturday 9 August. By Latrobe City Council - 7th August 2003 - Back to News The Regional Galleries Association of Queensland touring exhibition ‘Paper as Object’, celebrates paper as an art medium in new and extraordinary ways through the work of sixteen Australian and international artists.
Latrobe Regional Gallery Collections Manager, Rodney Scherer, said that the exhibition takes paper out of its traditional context as simply a surface upon which print and paint are applied. "Paper as Object is about paper, is of paper and will make its audience look at paper again," Mr Scherer said.
"Where once paper was a web of macerated cellulose fibre, it now can be a brew of waxes, clays, starches, magnetic wire, iridescent fibres, metallic threads, plastic coloured dots, genetically engineered fibres and more," Mr Scherer said.
Christine Ballinger, the exhibition’s curator, explained that Mary Dorahy, Wendy McGrath, Helen Mueller, Adele Outteridge, Helen Sanderson and Kevin Todd took part in an Artist-in-Residence with Industry program in 2001, where they worked with paper manufacturers to develop new ways of collaboratively exploring the medium of paper; and the works created form the nucleus of the exhibition.
"With the support of principal sponsor, Cotton Australia, Indigenous arts company, Euraba Paper created Bagaay (River), ten large cast cotton rag paper panels depicting the story of the river that weaves through their community in Boggabilla NSW, and these form an important part of the exhibition," Ms Ballinger said.
"Other works in the exhibition range from the sculptural and colourful to textural and textual and include lamps, artist’s books in a variety of forms, hangings and large wall pieces," Ms Ballinger said.
Other Australian artists involved in the project are Ruth Hadlow, Catherine K and Winsome Jobling. International artists include Sigrid Schraube and Hiltrud Schafer from Germany, Lucia Barata and Robert Manino from Italy, Jack Parry from Scotland and Toshiko Hirayama from Japan.
Paper as Object has been curated by Christine Ballinger for Noosa Regional Gallery with support from Cotton Australia, VISY Industries, Designer Packaging, Tomasetti Paper House and Australian Envelopes. The exhibition will feature at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 14 September.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays.
