Investing In Youth To Shape Our Community

Bass Coast Shire Council sponsored three delegates to the Asia Pacific Youth Conference held at Phillip Island from 18 to 24 July.

In its seventeenth year, and the first time it has been held in Australia, the Conference theme was "Action for global change through personal transformation". Council’s Community Strengthening Manager, Antoinette Mitchell, said Council decided to sponsor three local young people to attend the conference, so they could mix with Conference delegates from around the world.

Freya Sibly, Patrice Mahoney and Chilali Thorrowgood, all aged between 18 to 35 years, were the successful applicants.

"Sponsoring these delegates encourages them to develop their leadership skills and an awareness of diverse local and international communities," said Ms Mitchell. "We hope this will lead them to further their interest in positive change within their own communities."

The sponsored delegates networked amongst the estimated 150 participants, including Shaun Andrews, an Indigenous Monash University student and a Melbourne Grammar school Indigenous mentor. Shaun said the Conference was "a wonderful opportunity for people from our region to come together and make global changes on a local level".

"I gained inspiration from like-minded people, and an awareness of cultural and political differences in other countries."

Sponsored delegates will provide a report to Council on their participation at the Conference and how they will apply their experience to where they live.
