Coalition Backs Gippsland’S Young Farmers: Hall

Young farmers in Gippsland will benefit from the Coalition’s $1 million commitment over four years to the Victorian Young Farmers group, Eastern Region MP Peter Hall said.

By Peter Hall - 12th October 2010 - Back to News

"If elected in November the Liberal-Nationals Coalition will reinstate funding for the Victorian Young Farmers by providing $250,000 a year over four years for secretarial support," Mr Hall said.

"We will also create a unit within the Department of Primary Industries to promote opportunities for young people to expand their agricultural knowledge overseas."

Mr Hall said many young Gippsland farmers had benefited from being part of a Young Farmers Group.

"Now many of those groups have folded after Labor axed funding soon after it was elected to government in 1999," he added.

The Victorian Young Farmers, which once had a membership in the thousands, today, due to a lack of support from Labor, has dwindled to just six groups across the state and only several hundred members.

Mr Hall said a Coalition Government would revitalise the Young Farmers network for young people in rural Victoria by helping the group to apply for project funding and expand its membership.

"The Young Farmers provides rural-based men and women with access to support and social networks, mentoring and educational opportunities and leadership development," Mr Hall said.

"These opportunities will be extremely significant to the future of rural and regional Victoria as we work to arrest the flow of young people away from traditional farming backgrounds."

Mr Hall said the Coalition’s funding would ensure a vibrant and pro-active Young Farmers organisation which would go a long way to providing young people with the opportunities to remain or return to country Victoria to develop their careers.
