Mentors to provide skilled support for local youthBaw Baw Shire Council, through it's Youth Charter, is supporting the Gippsland Mentoring Alliance Plan-It Youth volunteer mentoring program coordinated by Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN. By Baw Baw Shire Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News According to council chief executive officer, Glenn Patterson, six staff, from a variety of disciplines and management levels have volunteered to be trained youth mentors.
"Baw Baw Latrobe LLEN with Gippsland Mentoring Alliance is providing the community a vital service by coordinating the training of these volunteers who will provide much needed support for many young people in Baw Baw and across Gippsland," said Mr Patterson.
"Strong relationships have been forged from the training with council, TAFE, Youth for Christ and the Warragul Regional College.
"Young people who have been supported through the program have reported improved achievement at school, but more importantly have often attributed their improved self esteem to the support provided to them from their mentor.
"Council is committed to the development of our community and we’re looking forward to having more staff join this program next year," said Mr Patterson.
Upon completion of training staff will be matched with a young person to mentor.
They build a relationship of friendship, trust and support where the mentor can assist in the young person to feel more connected as well as help them through any difficult periods in their life.
Gippsland Mentoring Alliance is supported by the Department of Victorian Communities.
