System Fails Gippslanders – 6 Year Wait For Dentures

Victoria’s health system is failing Gippslanders who are in need of care, Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis said today.

By Phillip Davis - 18th May 2006 - Back to News

Elderly Gippslanders are waiting years for essential basics including dental and podiatry.

Mr Davis cited one example of an 80-year-old Sale man who must wait years for essential treatment.

"This constituent is elderly and suffers diabetes," Mr Davis said.

"Despite his illness, this man has been waiting two years for podiatry care.

"Because podiatry care is extremely important for diabetics, this pensioner has been forced to pay for his own private podiatrist, putting extreme financial strain on himself and his wife who is his full-time carer.

"If this is not bad enough, this man also desperately needs new dentures, but there is a six year waiting list."

Mr Davis said the Labor Government’s health system was failing Gippsland residents, with many suffering in silence.

"Elderly people in Gippsland are simply putting up with health problems and do not like to complain," Mr Davis said.

"Therefore the majority of people affected by these unbelievable waiting lists go un-noticed, unheard and suffer in silence.

"For those forced to wait six years for new dentures, their quality of life is jeopardised along with their dignity.

"The Labor Government must face up to the serious inadequacies of its health system and stop ignoring elderly, frail Gippslanders who need health treatment.

"Elderly Gippslanders deserve more from their State Government."
