Students to Help Design San Remo and Phillip Island

Students on Phillip Island and in San Remo have been invited to take part in an exhibition

Sue Porter, Project Officer with Council, and students from Newhaven Primary School’s grade six class who will take part in the exhibit.

Students on Phillip Island and in San Remo have been invited to take part in an exhibition where they will create their vision of the Island and San Remo’s future. The exhibition is sponsored by Banfields and is part of the Phillip Island and San Remo Design Framework Plan.

Sue Porter, Project Officer with Bass Coast Shire Council, last week visited San Remo, Cowes and Newhaven Primary Schools and Newhaven College to explain the project to students.

"We have invited all the students to either paint, draw, sculpt or write an essay, story or poem that explains what they think is great about the place in which they live, and what they think this area should look like in the future," said Sue.

All pieces submitted will be exhibited at the Cowes Cultural Centre on 9 September. Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Miranda Sage, will select twenty of the best exhibits. The students who submitted these exhibits will be interviewed about their ideas and vision for Phillip Island and San Remo. The video footage of these students will be shown at various venues and forums throughout the Design Framework Project.

"We are going to give the children of Phillip Island and San Remo the opportunity to tell us what they see as the future of the area," said Sue. "All too often our children do not get the chance to voice their opinion, to tell us what is important to them and what they see as the future of the place in which they live and will grow up."

Sue said that one of the most important things the community needs to consider when planning for an area is who exactly we are planning for.

"Of course, we are planning for the people who live, work and visit here today, but we are also planning an area that we will ultimately leave to our children," she said.

Each student who submits a piece of work to the exhibition will receive a free movie pass to Banfields Cinema.

Sue said that she had been thrilled at the level of interest from students keen to participate in the project.

"The students have not only displayed great enthusiasm to participate, but also shown a tremendous understanding about the issues that are relevant to this area," said Sue. "It was great to be bombarded with questions from the students and I have no doubt that we will receive some fantastic work for this exhibition."
