Community Outrage over Jetty Car Park

The Bemm River Progress & Improvement Association Incorporated in conjunction with the Bemm River Angling Club held a public meeting on Wednesday 15 March 2006 at the Bemm River Hotel.

By Bemm River Progress & Improvement Association Inc. - 23rd March 2006 - Back to News

The intention of this meeting was to discuss the problem of the new $236k jetty not being accessible due to the flooded car park (when the entrance is closed) Whilst this new facility is unusable the ‘Fingerling’ jetty is the only launching ramp. This jetty is exceptionally hazardous and several injuries have been reported in addition to boat damage, near drownings and continual ‘boat ramp rage’. This situation is exacerbated during south east winds. (Amateur video from the recent long weekend is available.)

The East Gippsland Shire was made very aware of this problem before the new jetty was built and assured us that it was necessary to spend this money immediately or lose it back to the funding source (Marine Safety Victoria) and once the jetty was completed they would then build up the car park therefore making it a 365 day a year useable facility. The new jetty was completed in August 2005 and by November 2005 was totally unusable and to this day still inaccessible. The East Gippsland Shire have now basically brushed us aside which has been evident by absence of an official opening ceremony and have told us that the problem will go ‘under consideration’ in budget 2007.

Safety is paramount and we feel this cannot continue to be avoided any longer.

The East Gippsland Shire are all about tourism for our area but we are now seeing tourists avoiding our area due to the difficulty and unsafe manner of launching and retrieving boats especially for older boat operators, persons with handicaps and single boat operators.

The East Gippsland Shire will be in Bemm River on Friday 31 March at 2:30pm at the Bemm River Community Centre for their ‘Face to Face’ Community Consultation Program.
