Council sets up web link to tsunami appeals

Wellington Shire Council has joined a national local government effort to aid international relief in the wake of the tsunami disaster that has ravaged our Asian neighbours.

By Wellington Shire Council - 7th January 2005 - Back to News

Residents can now visit the council’s website at www.wellington.vic.gov.au and donate to their choice of appeals via the Australian Giving Centre - a secure online donation facility endorsed by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and administered by ‘Our Community’ with support from Westpac Bank.

‘Our Community’ takes no commission or fee for this service and ensures 100% of donations reach the group of the donator's choice (less normal bank fees)[1].

Tsunami appeals registered with the Australian Giving Centre so far include Oxfam Community Aid Abroad, Save the Children Fund, CARE Australia, International Women’s Development Agency, United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Australia International Needs (Australia) and Habitat for Humanity.

To access this facility simply click on the Donate Here image on the homepage of the council’s website and choose the appeal you wish to donate to.

Said Mayor Peter Gault: "The Australian Giving Centre has collected more than $2 million in the past four days for licensed fundraising organisations conducting appeals to support victims of the tsunami.

"The tragic consequences of the earthquake and tsunami at the tail end of the past year have been met with an amazing display of generosity all around the world, including within our local community.

"We know of a fundraising effort being planned by residents for 26 January in Sale for example and of fundraising amongst our own council staff.

"Wellington, through MAV and the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA), will also be considering areas where local government expertise might assist those affected by this tragedy."
