Titled ‘The Horse before the Carnival’, the exhibition is currently featuring in the International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell, where it will remain on show until Tuesday 2 November 2004.

Zibby Lelito, who grew up in Poland and now resides in Traralgon, was educated in the long tradition of Polish artists which spans 1,000 years. His father was a student of the most famous horse artist, Kossak. Zibby then studied under his father and other Polish artists and has mastered the technique of lifelike impressions of the horse, capturing the beauty and grace of the horse in its many and varied roles.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that most of Zibby’s artwork is in the possession of private collectors in Poland, Italy and Australia. "He has exhibited in both Australia and overseas and this exhibition is an attempt to bring his art to greater prominence in Gippsland," Ms Tegart said.

Commenting on his local support, Zibby said that he was extremely grateful for the sponsorship and support he had received from locals Werner and Kate Holz of Timeless Framing, in Traralgon, and for the assistance in promotion received from Mike Answerth.

Ms Tegart said ‘The Horse before the Carnival’ exhibition includes a collection of Zibby’s traditional works of wild horses, stock horses, polo ponies, military horses as well as his most recent works of thoroughbred race horses such as Phar Lap and Melbourne Cup winner Jeune.

"This is particularly relevant to the Power of Racing Latrobe City Spring Celebration and not only art lovers, but race goers are urged to visit the exhibition," Ms Tegart added.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700. Admission is free.
