Police Staffing Concerns Raised In Parliament

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the State Government to ensure that towns in his electorate are staffed by adequate police numbers.

Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday night, Mr Ingram told the Police Minister, Bob Cameron, there had been a major issue of a number of police officers who are not available for active duty due to stress leave and other issues, particularly in major stations across East Gippsland, like Bairnsdale.

"This leads to staffing problems in other stations which are required to backfill the major, 24-hour police station at Bairnsdale," Mr Ingram said.

"In stark contrast to most areas of regional Victoria, major towns across East Gippsland are experiencing significant increases in population numbers.

"Lakes Entrance in particular has been experiencing continual population growth for many years now.

"The community is very grateful for the provision of a new police station complex in the town approximately five years ago, but in regard to the issue of resourcing for that area, the increased population has led to increased crime statistics in the town.

There have been a number of very concerning incidents in the last few weeks and the community is very concerned about the level of crime.

"The community appreciates the job that our active police members undertake, but the government must ensure that adequate numbers are in place to support these members," Mr Ingram concluded.
