Coastal Action Plan For Gippsland Estuaries

Gippsland estuaries continue to be under the spotlight with the release of a discussion paper for the Gippsland Estuaries Coastal Action Plan.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 14th October 2005 - Back to News

The discussion paper for the Coastal Action Plan (CAP) was developed by the Gippsland Coastal Board following a number of community workshops across Gippsland.

Over 100 community members participated in seven workshops held between Mallacoota and Inverloch during August 2005.

Based on the data collected at these workshops a range of management themes and priorities for strategic action for estuaries across Gippsland have been identified and documented in a discussion paper.

Duncan Malcolm, Chair of the Gippsland Coastal Board, said that the range of values and threats identified by the 100 plus community members demonstrates the need for a strategic management framework for our highly productive estuarine environments.

"The discussion paper demonstrates the linkage between the data collected from community members and the emerging framework for the strategic management of estuaries across all of Gippsland," Mr Malcolm said.

"The process undertaken so far has identified habitat for important bird and fish species, recreation and the use of estuarine resources as high values."

"Development and land use pressures, decline of important habitat and pressure from recreational use were identified as key threats to Gippsland’s estuarine environments."

A range of stakeholders and community members and groups are being sent the discussion paper for review and comment during November.

"We encourage anyone who has an interest in any of Gippsland’s estuarine environments to read and provide feedback on this important document," Mr Malcolm said.

The discussion paper is available from the Gippsland Coastal Board website www.gcb.vic.gov.au, or for further information contact the Board on 03 5152 0451.

Comments are invited in writing to Kylie Debono, CAP Project Officer at the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority, PO Box 99, Leongatha 3953 or to kylied@wgcma.vic.gov.au by the November 18 2005.
