Council urges nominations for Achievement Awards

Latrobe City Council is encouraging local citizens and organisations to nominate achievers for the Alcoa Regional Achievers Award and the Kleenheat Gas Community of the Year Award.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 10th August 2004 - Back to News

The awards honour regional achievers throughout Victoria who have contributed to their local community, provided a positive image in their area, and are outstanding role models to the wider Victorian community.

The ‘Regional Achiever‘ from Latrobe will receive a trophy and $1000 to put towards their field of work, and the recipient of the ‘Community of the Year Award’ will receive a community plaque, a perpetual trophy and a $2000 grant.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that there are many individuals and groups in the local area that have had significant achievements in the community and make outstanding contributions to the municipality.

"Although the efforts of these groups are much appreciated by local citizens, the Regional Achievers Award and the Community of the Year Award provide a way of offering state-wide recognition for the hard work and dedication carried out by these groups and individuals," Cr White said.

The Alcoa Regional Achievers Award will honour five people throughout regional Victoria who have made a significant difference to their community through their work.

Greg Gebhart from Moe was awarded the Regional Achiever Award for Latrobe in 2003. Mr Gebhart displayed great commitment to the Moe community and the Gippsland region through his involvement in a variety of local projects. Mr Gebhart is passionate about education and has also been a council member, a volunteer for the Gippsland Regional Council Board for Adult, Community and Further Education and initiated the Gippsland Learning Technologies (Computer Education) conference, which is now an annual event.

The Kleenheat Gas Community of the Year Award rewards a community, group, organisation or town that has implemented a project that was beneficial to the local community.

Previous recipients include sport, art, entertainment, agricultural, community, business and volunteer groups that have made a significant contribution to their local area.

Although the awards have been distributed throughout regional areas in Western Australia and Queensland for some years, this will be only the third time that the awards have been presented in regional Victoria.

"Both the Alcoa Regional Achievers Award and the Kleenheat Gas Community of the Year Award are extremely important because they let people know that the community appreciates their hard work. They also help to raise the profile of Latrobe’s achievements in other regional areas, and provide a platform for encouraging and sharing initiatives," Cr White said.

"I strongly urge people to nominate groups and individuals from Latrobe City that are making a difference in our community," Cr White concluded.

Nomination forms are available from Latrobe City Council; through coupons in The Weekly Times; from Southern Cross Ten and Kleenheat Gas Houses; or by contacting the Awards Office on telephone, 9802 2000 or email vic@awardsaustralia.com.

Nominations close Friday 20 August 2004, and winners will be announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Saturday 23 October in Ballarat. For more information access the Awards Australia website, www.awardsaustralia.com.
