Mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan said the project funded by the Australian Government’s Safer Streets Programme involved the installation of 52 lights along the west side of the creek, from the southern boundary of the Traffic School to the existing lights at Morwell East Residents Association (MERA) Park.

"Installation is scheduled to begin in October and will see many safety benefits including improved pedestrian transport links at dusk and night for those who use the area to access nearby facilities such as sports clubs, community group activities and MidValley," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"The Waterhole Creek pathway, cultural walk, fitness station, BMX track and park areas are there for the community’s benefit and once the lighting is installed, the community can feel more confident accessing them.

"An increase in activity in the area will lead to greater community connectedness, pride and social wellbeing."

Cr O’Callaghan added that improved surveillance and visibility of the pathway should be a deterrent for criminal activity and antisocial behaviour.

"Signage will be erected along the pathway to inform residents of works before installation commences in mid-October," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"We’d really appreciate the understanding and cooperation of community members as the work takes place. We do expect installation to be complete by November 2017."
