Council offering financial assistance for landholders

Wellington Shire Council is encouraging residents to utilise the range of environmental programs it offers which provide advice and essential services across the shire.

By Wellington Shire Council - 20th January 2005 - Back to News

Current programs offered by the council include the Native Vegetation Protection Program, the Weeds for Trees program and the Wetlands Protection Program, which all work towards maintaining a clean, healthy and ecologically sustainable environment across the shire.

Financial assistance is available to landholders through these programs for management of natural assets including fencing, weed control and a range of other activities to improve Wellington’s natural environment.

The council’s Environmental Planner is also responsible for the implementation of the Wellington Shire Environmental Policy, and provides frequent and ongoing environmental advice to internal and external parties, and integrates environmental considerations into the council’s policies and functions.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "These invaluable programs that the council provides are crucial in promoting a high level of environmental awareness within the community. An extensive range of environmental initiatives are available to local landholders, residents and community groups, and cover the entire 11,000 square kilometres of the shire.

"We brief community groups, represent the shire on environmental committees, and advocate on behalf of our residents with other government departments. As Victoria’s third largest shire, we have significant amounts of vegetation and natural resources to protect, and we are committed to working in partnership with our community to achieve this."

For more information about the environmental services offered by Wellington Shire Council please telephone its Environmental Planner, Colleen Murphy on 1300 366 244.
